Bar Americano

Drinking in public!

Date of visit: numerous times since opening day

A kiosk on the National Mall, technically the food court for the adjacent Air & Space museum. All kiosks on the mall apparently sell hooch but this is the one worth stopping at.

Vibe:

Being a National Mall kiosk, seating is outdoors only. You order at the window and take your pick of available tables. This is a place to relax, enjoy the weather, and people watch.

More of a pizza & coffee joint that happens to serve alcohol; not the spot to pound drinks and get messy (although you’re welcome to try). The pizza is fantastic and no visit would be complete without a slice.

Drinks:

Selection includes a rotating selection of craft cans, tallboys of cheaper stuff, a riff on the Aperol spritz, and “wine” (who drinks that?). Menu available here.

The Move:

Given the hours, there are two great ways to use this fine establishment:

First, it’s a lunch spot. Hell, you could even make it a late breakfast spot if you’re a morning boozer. The museums also open at 10am, so I recommend hitting one early and swinging by to fill up before your second. Beer and pizza makes any trip better.

Second, it’s a great transition point to the evening. A 6pm close means no late night on the Mall; however, you’re not a far walk from bars in Chinatown or Eastern Market. If you’re looking to venture further, L’Enfant station is but a few blocks away. This is a nice central location to relax, fill up on pizza, and keep a buzz going (or start one).

Bonus:

They occasionally run free coffee and/or wine tastings on the weekends. Check social media for such events.

Nearby places of interest:

  • You’re on the National Mall. Hit up a museum! Pro tip: free museums = free public bathrooms.
